Securing Vietnam’s Busiest Domestic Terminal
The Customer - Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) and Tan Son Nhat International Airport

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), located in Ho Chi Minh City, is Vietnam’s busiest aviation hub. With the launch of Terminal 3 (T3), the airport has expanded its capacity to handle 50 million
passengers per year — making it the largest domestic terminal in the country.

ACV, which operates airports nationwide, sought a trusted technology partner to support this critical infrastructure expansion with high-performance screening capabilities, operational reliability, and scalable innovation.

The Challenge - Enabling High-Capacity Passenger Flow with Advanced Security

As T3 was designed to handle a sharp increase in domestic travel, security infrastructure needed to match that scale — delivering fast, accurate, and reliable screening to ensure both safety and throughput. The Airport required technology that could detect evolving threats, integrate seamlessly into checkpoint and hold baggage processes, and adapt to future regulatory upgrades, including Standard 3 screening.

Smiths Detection’s track record at Tan Son Nhat’s existing terminals, T1 and T2, played a key role.
But this time, the client also demanded integrated innovation: not only proven detection performance but improved passenger experience and lower total cost of ownership.

The Solution - A Fully Integrated Screening Ecosystem

Smiths Detection delivered a comprehensive security solution across both checkpoint and hold baggage operations at T3, featuring:

  • 18 x HI-SCAN 7555aTiX — multi-view X-ray systems with automatic detection of explosives in carry-on and hold baggage, upgradeable to CT for future compliance.
  • 7 x HI-SCAN 7555aTiX integrated with the iLane A20 smart tray return system — designed to enhance checkpoint flow and
    increase throughput.
  • 4 x HI-SCAN 100100T-2is and 8 x EDX-2is — high-performance systems for hold baggage screening
Why Smiths Detection?

Several factors drove ACV’s decision to partner with Smiths Detection once again:

  • Proven performance at T1 and T2, with consistently reliable detection and responsive service delivery.
  • Integrated innovation — the combination of advanced detection (7555aTiX) with iLane A20 created an intelligent, streamlined checkpoint environment.
  • Local capability — supported by long-term partner NPT and a network of over 50 engineers across Vietnam, ensuring rapid installation and on-demand service.
  • Future-readiness — solutions installed at T3 are upgradeable to Standard 3, protecting investment and ensuring regulatory compliance in the years ahead.
The Outcome - Elevated Security, Operational Efficiency, and Passenger Experience

Operational from April 19, 2025, the screening solution at T3 is delivering measurable results from day one.

  • Smoother passenger flow and reduced checkpoint congestion
  • Enhanced detection accuracy and screening confidence
  • A streamlined and intuitive experience for both passengers and operators
  • Readiness for future screening mandates, protecting long-term value

This installation reinforces Smiths Detection’s role as a trusted partner in the region’s aviation modernisation — bringing proven technologies
and scalable solutions to one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing travel markets.

Security is a top priority as we expand our capacity and welcome more passengers through T3. We selected Smiths Detection because of their proven experience at Tan Son Nhat and their ability to deliver a future-ready solution. The result is a smoother, safer screening process that benefits both passengers and staff.
