Product

test

At Smiths Detection, we pride ourselves on developing quality products that are built to last decades not years. They are designed to be serviceable and upgradable to meet changing needs. Our equipment has among the highest energy efficiency in our industry, reducing both our customers’ operating costs and greenhouse-gas emissions.

When it comes time to replace your product, we'll be on hand to make sure recycling and disposal is done responsibly. Takeback schemes exist for several products, allowing us to recycle or refurbish equipment for future use.

Our new digital-first SMS service platform means that a field technician needs to go to site only if an issue cannot be solved remotely, while our APM software enables the remote monitoring of system health to prevent issues arising in the first place.

Responsible Disposal

Product sustainability starts at the earliest stage. During product design we consider product energy efficiency, supply chain, materials chosen, serviceability, and end-of-life. By doing so we can help build and maintain products that last years and years, with the potential for upgrade to newer technology or to be used by a number of subsequent customers.

Each of Smiths Detection’s five manufacturing sites is ISO14001-certified. As part of this, we are continuously reviewing the impact of our operations to see if we can further reduce waste within our operations (including greenhouse gases) and improve our environmental performance. Our sites are all supplied with green electricity.

We’re committed to making equipment that stands the test of time. But the reality is that every hard-working system needs regular service and maintenance to ensure performance and maximise the life of equipment. By designing for service, our 700+ service team are able to maintain systems or replace parts as needed. The use of predictive algorithms ensures early replacement minimising the parts required and transportation overhead for parts and people.

Creating long-lasting equipment designed to provide future benefits that can be in the field. Our growing digital offering and product extensions allow for easy, on-the-spot, upgrades that can renew in-service equipment by adding capability and helping keep systems in use for longer.

When a system does reach the end of its functional life, we encourage customers to contacts us to ensure that we can ensure that those parts that can be re-used are captured and those that can’t be reused are recycled sustainably and in accordance with relevant regulations. We believe in resource optimization. Our disposal process includes extracting valuable components and materials that can be recycled or reused, reducing waste and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Environmental

test

Each of Smiths Detection’s five manufacturing sites is ISO14001-certified. As part of this, we are continuously reviewing the impact of our operations to see if we can further reduce waste within our operations (including greenhouse gases) and improve our environmental performance.

The requirement for continuous improvement from ISO certification aligns with Smiths Detection’s LEAN manufacturing methodology, which seeks to reduce waste and create efficient, resilient processes while bringing the highest level of quality control and value to our customers. This methodology is something we seek to pass onto our suppliers, developing strong partnerships to ensure quality and effectiveness.

As an organisation, we have ambitious targets for reducing waste and greenhouse-gas emissions. At Smiths Detection over 90%of our energy today comes from renewable resources and we recycle more than 90% of our waste.

As part of Smiths Group, we are committed to achieving net zero in our operations by 2040. Find out more at Smiths.com
