Product sustainability starts at the earliest stage. During product design we consider product energy efficiency, supply chain, materials chosen, serviceability, and end-of-life. By doing so we can help build and maintain products that last years and years, with the potential for upgrade to newer technology or to be used by a number of subsequent customers.
Each of Smiths Detection’s five manufacturing sites is ISO14001-certified. As part of this, we are continuously reviewing the impact of our operations to see if we can further reduce waste within our operations (including greenhouse gases) and improve our environmental performance. Our sites are all supplied with green electricity.
We’re committed to making equipment that stands the test of time. But the reality is that every hard-working system needs regular service and maintenance to ensure performance and maximise the life of equipment. By designing for service, our 700+ service team are able to maintain systems or replace parts as needed. The use of predictive algorithms ensures early replacement minimising the parts required and transportation overhead for parts and people.
Creating long-lasting equipment designed to provide future benefits that can be in the field. Our growing digital offering and product extensions allow for easy, on-the-spot, upgrades that can renew in-service equipment by adding capability and helping keep systems in use for longer.
When a system does reach the end of its functional life, we encourage customers to contacts us to ensure that we can ensure that those parts that can be re-used are captured and those that can’t be reused are recycled sustainably and in accordance with relevant regulations. We believe in resource optimization. Our disposal process includes extracting valuable components and materials that can be recycled or reused, reducing waste and contributing to a more sustainable future.
