Smiths Detection’s valued customer Fiumicino Airport wins World's Best Airport Security Processing at Skytrax 2024 Awards

The installations of HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX machines at Rome Fiumicino Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 have led to a significant improvement in passenger experience and security controls

- Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening, is delighted to see our prominent customer, Italy’s largest airport, Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci - Fiumicino Airport - win the 2024 Skytrax’s ‘World's Best Airport Security Processing’ award. Fiumicino International Airport was recently awarded 5-Star by Skytrax and the Best Airport in Europe in the category of airports with over 40 million passengers for seven years in a row by ACI World.

The World Airport Awards, today considered the most prestigious awards in the aviation sector at an international level, are assigned on the basis of a survey with which passengers can annually evaluate their airport experience on a vast range of airport services and infrastructures, from check-in to arrivals, from shopping to security to departures, in over 550 airports around the world.

Fiumicino airport is renowned for its ease of going through security controls thanks to the professionalism of ADR Security agents and the operational excellence of its processes. Thanks to the deployment of Smiths Detection’s leading CT checkpoint technology, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, Aeroporti di Roma, a Mundys Group’s company, improved again its capability to deliver the highest standards of cabin baggage control while at the same time offering the best passenger experience at the security checkpoint.

The Computed Tomography (CT) technology allows passengers to leave electronics and liquids in bags rather than remove them for screening, improving the customer experience, security effectiveness and waiting times. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is the most energy-efficient scanner of its type worldwide, featuring low noise levels, zero vibration and a 30% higher belt speed than other CT X-ray scanners, helping to promote a calmer checkpoint.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is operational in the two main Fiumicino checkpoints: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

Gabriel Pequignot, Smiths Detection Head of Market, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate our valued customer’s key win at the Skytrax 2024 Awards. It is great to see the results of the airport’s commitment to security and improved passenger experience being rewarded; we wish Rome Fiumicino Airport many more successes.

Receiving the recognition for Aeroporti di Roma during the ceremony, held at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Frankfurt, Germany, was Marco Stramaccioni, Managing Director of ADR Security, said: "We are very proud of this award which recognizes the great investments that Aeroporti di Roma has made in the field of security in recent years, both at Fiumicino airport and at the “G.B. Pastine” in Ciampino. We are aware that this contribution represents only a starting point in the work, also thanks to the support of the most sophisticated technologies, of daily improvement of the services and infrastructures present at the airport to guarantee a travel experience to remember for the millions of passengers who depart or they arrive in Rome. Our mission to outline the airport of the future also lies in the promotion and implementation of security in all its aspects".

Congratulations to Fiumicino International Airport and the ADR Security team!
