Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces the installation of 21 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX units at Frankfurt Airport’s newly opened Terminal 3. The company’s industry-leading 3D X-ray scanner delivers high-resolution 3D computed tomography images and intelligent AI-driven automatic detection capabilities. It also allows travellers to keep liquids of up to two litres and electronic devices inside their carry-on baggage.
Terminal 3 will initially accommodate up to 19 million passengers annually, with capacity expected to expand to 25 million over time. Managing this level of throughput requires modern security infrastructure that strengthens screening effectiveness while improving passenger flow. In turn, this supports a more efficient and streamlined travel experience.
Alexander Rund, Sales Director North and East Europe at Smiths Detection, said: “We are proud to continue our 35-year partnership with Frankfurt Airport. Since we first began working together, Smiths Detection has installed more than 300 X-ray screening systems across its terminals. With Frankfurt Airport’s drive to modernise, our HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX scanners, which reduce the need to remove liquids and electronics from hand baggage, are the ideal upgrade. Travellers and staff alike can be confident the security check process will be frictionless while also providing the highest level of security.”
Jan Müller, Head of Aviation Security Technology at Frankfurt Airport, said: “The opening of Terminal 3 is a major milestone for European aviation infrastructure, and we are very happy to have selected Smiths Detection as our trusted partner in this endeavour. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX has delivered a very high level of operational performance to our complete satisfaction and the dedicated on-site support during installation has been impeccable. We look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

About HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX: The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and the updated Model S provide advanced carry-on baggage screening through Computed Tomography (CT) and automatic explosives detection algorithms. Both systems are approved to ECAC EDS CB C3 and certified by STAC, ENAC, and IPMO. In addition, HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX has achieved TSA APSS v6.2 Level 2 certification.
Systems approved to ECAC EDS CB C3 standards remove the need for passengers to take electronic devices, liquids and gels out of their hand luggage. This helps speed up the screening process and makes the checkpoint experience more convenient and less stressful.
As baggage moves through the gantry on the conveyor belt, the system rotates at a constant speed and captures hundreds of images to generate high-quality 3D visuals in real time. This allows for more accurate assessment of bag contents. The user interface was also recognised with the 2020 Red Dot Award for its fast and intuitive 3D image evaluation.
With a 20 cm reduction in width and a 350 kg reduction in weight, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S can be integrated more easily into existing Smiths Detection and third-party checkpoints, as well as into environments with space and layout constraints.
Both the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and the Model S can be integrated with iCMORE, the automated object recognition software that detects prohibited items such as weapons. In addition, iCMORE has been certified to ECAC APIDS Standard 1 in combination with the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX.
