Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, and a business of Smiths Group plc, has successfully completed a major checkpoint upgrade at Malta International Airport (MLA). The deployment enhances security screening, boosts passenger throughput, and supports compliance with new EU regulations for cabin baggage screening.
As part of the project, Smiths Detection installed six HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model-S scanners and six Cassioli Fast2Check lanes, replacing the airport’s older X-ray checkpoint lanes. The advanced CT technology allows passengers to leave electronics and liquids in their bags, reducing queues and improving the checkpoint experience.
The solution also includes a remote screening capability, with a centralised control room and redundant matrix server architecture to support efficient decision-making and strengthen operational resilience. A seven-year full-risk service contract ensures long-term system performance and cost-effective maintenance.
Smiths Detection was awarded the contract following a competitive procurement process, achieving the highest technical score for lane design, build quality, and network reliability. The company has been a long-term partner to Malta International Airport, providing checkpoint and explosive trace detection systems for over 20 years.

Completed in January 2025, the solution enables MLA to manage continued traffic growth within its current footprint. It also supports the airport’s long-term expansion plan, with terminal developments scheduled between 2027 and 2030.
