UK Department for Transport approves Smiths Detection’s SDX 10080 SCT for hold baggage and air cargo screening

SDX 10080 SCT Approval

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces its SDX 10080 SCT has received UK Department for Transport (DfT) approval for deployment across UK airports and cargo operators for hold baggage and air cargo screening.

The SDX 10080 SCT balances operators’ key priorities: security effectiveness, operational performance and passenger flow. It has a throughput of more than 1,800 bags per hour and its dual-energy Computed Tomography (CT) scanner delivers outstanding detection performance that adapts to evolving operational and regulatory demands.

The approval further reinforces Smiths Detection’s position as a trusted partner to the UK aviation sector. Its screening technologies have been deployed across airports throughout the UK and has supported major CT screening modernisation programmes.

Andy Evripides, Head of Market, UK and Ireland at Smiths Detection, said: “With DfT approval, UK airports and cargo operators can now deploy the SDX 10080 SCT, our next-generation hold baggage and air cargo screening operations. We now look forward to partnering with airports and cargo operators that seek to modernise their security infrastructure to strengthen security, improve throughput and support a more positive passenger experience.”

The DfT approval follows SDX 10080 SCT’s recent ECAC EDS Standard 3.1 certification.

About SDX 10080 SCT

The Smiths Detection SDX 10080 SCT builds on decades of expertise in Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) to deliver a new evolution in hold baggage and air cargo screening. Building on the proven heritage of the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT and CTX 9800, the system is ECAC EDS 3.1 approved and combines established design features with new advancements. It also provides a scalable platform designed to support evolving standards such as ECAC Standard 4 or TSA 9.0. At its core lies a dual-energy Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, designed to deliver outstanding detection performance with an optional dual-view, dual-energy line scanner. while offering a future-proof system that adapts to evolving operational and regulatory demands.

By uniting efficiency, accuracy and sustainability in a single platform, the SDX 10080 SCT ensures reliable performance today and flexibility for future requirements. The optional upgradeable line scanner (LS) supplements high-quality 3D images with high-resolution 2D images. This is crucial for identifying thin wires and small objects (such as detonators) to ensure reliable on-screen alarm resolution. Additionally, with two scanners there is inherent self-redundancy, ensuring continued operation in case one goes down.

The SDX 10080 SCT has been designed for high-volume screening environments with a throughput of more than 1,800 bags per hour and a large 107 x 81 cm tunnel. At the same time, reduced power consumption and a simplified air-based cooling system support lower operating costs, and the reduced height with unchanged footprint makes installation straightforward. Built on a scalable and adaptable platform, the SDX 10080 SCT delivers long-term value through reduced total cost of ownership and a sustainable investment with minimal risk.
