Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, announces that its cutting-edge technology was used this week at the extraordinary NATO and G7 summits on 24 March and the EU Council meetings on 24 – 25March, in Brussels. The summits were attended by key international figures including Presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Prime Ministers Boris Johnson, Fumio Kishida and Justin Trudeau and European Council President Charles Michel.
Security authorities relied on Smiths Detection threat detection systems to check and clear venues in advance and engage in vehicle and people monitoring during the intensive two-day summits. Three handheld, portable detectors were utilised: the RadSeeker for exposing nuclear threat materials; the LCD for detecting chemical warfare agents; and the HazMatID Elite for identifying solid and liquid chemicals.
Smiths Detection equipment was deployed in line with the EU Counterterrorism Agenda 2022 and operated by specially trained Protective Security Advisors. These teams are deployed on an ad-hoc basis to support national authorities upon request at high risk events (such as EU summits) and are centred around the collaboration of national police and security experts to build resilience by pooling expertise and experience. The last several years Belgian police forces have been using this equipment to secure high risk events like today’s.
