How does X-ray Diffraction work?

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technology works by creating a ‘diffraction fingerprint’ of molecular structures, supporting accurate material identification and allowing the system to differentiate between substances, even those with very similar densities. This makes the XRD particularly effective for explosive and narcotics detection, including constantly changing compounds in powder, liquid or solid form.

In security screening environments, the XRD can receive alarm queries from Level 1 scanners. The Diffraction technology helps resolve them through trace detection or by automatically clearing false alarms, reducing the need for manual inspections and improving operational efficiency.

Benefits

Benefits 1 (1)

Incremental detection accuracy
X-ray Diffraction provides highly accurate material discrimination based on molecular structure.

Benefits 2

operational savings
Automating alarm resolution with X-ray Diffraction scanners boosts operational efficiency and reduces costs.

Benefits 3

future proof security effectiveness
X-ray Diffraction is one of the few technologies likely to meet the requirements of future regulations.

In-line air cargo
automatic screening

Small parcel and mail operations face constant pressure to efficiently screen large volumes.

The groundbreaking Smiths Detection SDX 10060 XDi leverages X-ray Diffraction (XRD) technology to automate alarm resolution, significantly enhancing security and operational efficiency.

Customs narcotic screening

The war against illegal narcotics is being fought on many fronts – including customs control points at international airports, logistics centres and express forwarding hubs around the world.

The SDX 10060 XDi transforms the process of screening passenger luggage and parcels for drugs – as well as other prohibited items and contraband.
