The customer:

Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS)

Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) is one of Asia’s leading cruise terminals and a major gateway into Singapore. Operated by SATS-Creuers Cruise Services, a joint venture between SATS and Creuers del Port de Barcelona, the terminal is designed to accommodate some of the world’s largest cruise ships. Since opening in 2012, it has processed more than eight million passengers across more than 2,000 ship calls and can accommodate two mega ships simultaneously.

As cruise demand continues to rise, MBCCS is expanding to meet growing expectations. Announced April 2025, the terminal enhancement programme was designed to increase capacity from 6,800 to 11,700 passengers, a rise of more than 70%, while improving check-in, passenger amenities and ground transport access.

The Challenge:

Maintaining Dependable Screening in a Busy Cruise Environment

For MBCCS, the priority was to maintain a smooth, efficient and secure passenger journey in a live cruise environment with consistently heavy throughput demands. Screening systems installed when the terminal first opened had been in operation for more than 13 years. As the terminal prepared for higher passenger volumes and more intensive operations, reliability and service continuity became increasingly important.

This was not simply a replacement exercise. For Marina Bay, it was about protecting flow, reducing operational risk and ensuring screening capability could support the terminal’s next phase of growth.

The Solution:

Checkpoint and Hold Baggage Screening Backed by Responsive Local Support

Smiths Detection has supported MBCCS since the terminal entered operation in 2012, providing screening capability across both checkpoint and hold baggage environments. The installed fleet includes HI-SCAN 6040 systems for checkpoint screening and HI-SCAN 100100 systems for hold baggage screening, with additional units introduced to support the terminal’s latest expansion requirements.

Smiths Detection’s Singapore teams worked closely across service, engineering, sales and project coordination to support site survey, delivery, installation and commissioning. The result was a strengthened screening set-up delivered with the responsiveness and continuity required in a live operating environment.

The outcome:

Stronger readiness for future demand

With additional screening systems introduced as part of the terminal’s latest upgrade, MBCCS is better to support higher passenger volumes and more intensive operations. The enhanced screening set-up helps maintain smooth passenger processing and dependable day-to-day operations as the terminal expands capacity and prepares to manage dual mega ship calls more efficiently.

For Marina Bay, this is an investment in readiness: supporting future growth, protecting the passenger experience and reinforcing the terminal’s role as one of Asia’s leading cruise gateways.

Why Smiths Detection?

Smiths Detection brought more than equipment to the project. It brought long-standing site knowledge, proven operational experience and trusted local support. Proven track record in service innovation and digital transformation.

Key value drivers included:

  • Deep familiarity with the Marina Bay environment, built through more than a decade of on-site support.
  • Capability across both checkpoint and hold baggage screening, giving MBCCS one established partner across critical screening touchpoints.
  • Responsive service and maintenance support, helping sustain performance and customer confidence over time.
  • A partnership approach focused on continuity, resilience and long-term operational value.
As Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore is preparing for its next phase of growth, it was important for us to strengthen our screening capability in step with that ambition. Smiths Detection brought the experience, local support and operational understanding needed to help us enhance readiness while maintaining a smooth passenger journey.
