Smiths Detection Inc. continues to ‘Go Green’ with new Sustainability Initiatives; Joins Maryland Green Registry

Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI) announces three new “green” initiatives focused on environmentally responsible practices.

SDI’s Edgewood site has joined the Regional Manufacturing Institute(RMI) Energy Conservation Program,to assess and optimize energy consumption through no-cost engineering consultation.

Building on this, SDI Edgewood has also been accepted to the Maryland Green Registry, an expanding group of organizations working toward a sustainable Maryland through sound environmental practices. Organized by the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Pollution Prevention Program, this distinction recognizes the measureable environmental improvement programs implemented at the site as well as planned sustainability and conservation efforts.

The Edgewood site has also established a Green Team, members of the workforce who will help drive continuous improvement in resource conservation in all aspects of business operations. The team has engaged SDI employees to offer ideas for improvement in energy use, water consumption or waste management, for example.

Terry Gibson, President of SDI, said: “SDI has focused on implementing environmentally responsible conservation practices, and these latest initiatives enrich our practices as a socially responsible corporation. Inclusion of employees’ stewardship for sustainability will set a new bar for other organizations to follow as it demonstrates a culture dedicated to continuous improvement in all facets of operations.”

Historically, SDI has made improvements in energy consumption and waste management, and has achieved and maintained ISO 14001 Certification.
