Greek Authorities recently seized 338 million smuggled cigarettes at the Port of Piraeus, which if successfully smuggled would have led to a loss of €72 million euros in tax and duties.
Red flags in manifests led to customs agents to pull suspicious containers, labelled as transporting ‘food items’ aside for screening. The iCMORE equipped HCVM – our automatic object recognition technology, revealed discrepancies in the cargo and helped to uncover the smuggled cigarettes. The initial discovery, which occurred in February, allowed authorities to bust the international smuggling ring. The cargo was on route from Dubai to Syria where the cigarettes would be distributed throughout the region, leading to a loss of tax revenue.
