Spanning 750km from Addis Ababa – Djibouti connects landlocked Ethiopia with the nearest port at the Red Sea, creating another connection between Africa’s fastest growing economy and the rest of the globe.

A $3.4bn investment in the new railway line has cut the journey time between the two capitals from three days by road to a mere 10 hours, benefitting commercial and passengers alike. To protect this important link, Ethiopia’s national security service chose Smiths Detection to help overcome the challenge of preventing threats to both trains and infrastructure.

“Our research confirmed that Smiths Detection is a key player, with extensive experience in ensuring the safety of people and assets,” explained Behailu Sintayehu, the Ethiopian Railways Corporation’s chief officer, engineering procurement department. “We look forward to our relationship continuing beyond the first installations and into the future.”
