Mal Maginnis, President

MAL MAGINNIS was appointed as President in September 2011.  Mal joined Smiths Detection as VP Asia Pacific in July 2001 and was appointed to the role of President Smiths Detection Asia Pacific in early 2004. He became President of the former Global Military and Emergency Responder business unit in February 2008, before taking up the role of Head of Business Management in August 2010.  Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Mal had an extensive professional career in many countries including training in Australia, Asia, UK and US. He has worked as a consultant in the security industry and held executive position within the Australian Defence Force during his 21 years service.

David Anning, VP Global Operations

DAVE ANNING was appointed VP Global Operations in April 2012. He joined from Smiths Medical where he was VP, Integrated Business Planning, having previously been Director of Global Supply Chain, responsible for demand & supply planning, inventory management, warehousing & logistics and sales & operations planning. He also had extensive experience running global supply chains, change management programs and Oracle implementations. Having first joined Smiths Group in December 2000, he held a number of senior corporate posts, including Chief Technology Officer where he led the transformation of Smiths global IT infrastructure, before moving to the Medical division. Dave Anning holds a BE (Hons) degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering and an MBA from the University of Bath.

Pennie Boyko, Vice President, Human Resources

PENNIE BOYKO joined Smiths in September 1997 in a Corporate HR role.  She was appointed Director HR for Smiths Medical in February 2001 and to her present position as Vice President of Human Resources, in January 2009. Prior to joining Smiths, Pennie worked for the Ford Motor Company and previously spent three years working for News International in Liverpool and Wapping.  She commenced her HR career working for Eastern Energy plc. Pennie has a BA Joint Honours in Humanities and a postgraduate diploma in HR.  She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.

 

Sal Cipres, VP Global Programs

Sal Cipres joined Smiths Detection 2006, holding responsibility for product & technology development at a specialist business unit in Pasadena California, becoming General Manager responsible for all site operations. In 2010 he became General Manager of the Edgewood, Maryland site and Director of Global Programmes for the Chemical & Biological Sensor business line. He was appointed to his current role in 2012. Prior to Smiths Detection, Sal Cipres worked for BAE SYSTEMS for 18 years, ultimately as Director of Homeland Security Systems. He previously worked with Northrop Corporation, Dell Computer and Eaton Corporation. He holds an Engineering degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and also attended the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, and Stanford University for advanced programme management.  He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), and a member of the Program Management Institute (PMI). 

Andrew Davis, Director of Communications

ANDREW DAVIS was appointed Director of Communications in October 2010.  He was previously Director of Communications, Europe, Russia, Central Asia & Israel, for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.  Prior to that he was Product and Corporate Press Relations Manager for Porsche Cars Great Britain and was a Press Officer at Group Lotus Limited.  Andrew started his career as an account executive for The Impact Agency, having graduated from Glasgow University with an MA.

Shaun Doherty, Finance Director

SHAUN DOHERTY joined Smiths Detection as Finance Director in April 2012. For the previous 11 years he worked for Tata Steel (formerly Corus), one of the top ten steel producers globally. His roles within Corus included Finance Director for the group's international distribution and service centre division, operating across more than 150 sites. Subsequently, he combined his role as Corporate Finance Director with support to the Chief Executive on day to day business and strategic projects.

Terry Gibson, VP Service

TERRY GIBSON joined Smiths Detection in November 2010 as the Vice President, Service. He was appointed to the Divisional leadership team in August 2012.  In July 2011 Terry received his Certification Protection Professional from ASIS.  Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Terry held a number of senior management positions in the security industry, including Vice President and General Manager, Maritime and Security Solutions business unit for DRS Technical Services, and Vice President for SAIC’s Transportation and Security business unit. Terry holds a BS Degree in Applied Sciences from The University of Alabama.

Christopher Roberts, General Counsel

CHRIS ROBERTS was appointed General Counsel in September 2010.  He joined Smiths Detection from CBS where he was Legal Director for the Outdoor Advertising Division.  Prior to joining CBS, Chris was Group General Counsel for Reckitt Benckiser and has held significant roles at both Sybase Inc and IBM Inc. He had joined Slaughter and May in March 1990 having achieved his LLB from Warwick University. Chris is also an Attorney at Law for New York as well as an MBA graduate from the Rotterdam School of Management affiliated to Erasmus University. Prior to pursuing a legal career, he graduated from Cambridge University.

Rod Wilson, VP Products

ROD WILSON joined Smiths Detection in 1993 at the Bushey, Watford site.  He held a number of management roles, principally relating to the development of chemical and biological agent detection products, before taking up his current appointment in 2012. In this role he has responsibility for the definition, communication and implementation of a five year product vision and strategy. Rod Wilson is also Site Head at Bushey, with responsibility for the office and production facility and its 260 employees.  He holds a degree in Physics from University of Manchester, UK, and a doctorate from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

Brian Boso

Dr BRIAN BOSO was appointed Chief Scientist in 2010, and is co-leader of the divisional technology team responsible for all Research & Development activities.  He was previously Chief Technology Officer for the Global Military & Emergency Responders group. Brian joined Smiths Detection in August 2003, having previously held the positions of VP of R&D at Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. and VP of Technology at Tektronix, Inc. During his career, Brian has held positions in technology/R&D management, basic/applied research, product/process development, marketing/sales management, and manufacturing. Brian graduated from the University of Illinois with a Ph.D. in physics and held a postdoctoral position at the Pennsylvania State University

Hermann Ries

Dr HERMANN RIES is co-leader of the divisional technology team responsible for all Research & Development activities, with particular responsibility for imaging technologies.  Hermann Ries joined Heimann Systems (later Smiths Heimann) in 1989, becoming R & D Director in 1996 which embraced the co-ordination of R & D activities in France and Tennessee. In 2003 he was appointed R & D Director of Smiths Detection International/EMEA, then in 2008 Chief Technology Officer for the Security & Inspection group, before taking up his current appointment in August 2010.
