Mal Maginnis, President

MAL MAGINNIS was announced as President in September 2011, immediately adding responsibilities for Operations, Sales and Finance to his role as Head of the Business Management area, comprising the Program, Product and Technology groups.  He will fully take up his role as President on 1 January 2012.  Mal joined Smiths Detection as VP Asia Pacific in July 2001 and was appointed to the role of President Smiths Detection Asia Pacific in early 2004. He became President of the former Global Military and Emergency Responder business unit in February 2008, before taking up his Business Management role in August 2010.  Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Mal had an extensive professional career in many countries including training in Australia, Asia, UK and US. He has worked as a consultant in the security industry and held executive position within the Australian Defence Force during his 21 years service.

Pennie Boyko, Vice President, Human Resources

PENNIE BOYKO joined Smiths in September 1997 in a Corporate HR role.  She was appointed Director HR for Smiths Medical in February 2001 and to her present position as Vice President of Human Resources, in January 2009. Prior to joining Smiths, Pennie worked for the Ford Motor Company and previously spent three years working for News International in Liverpool and Wapping.  She commenced her HR career working for Eastern Energy plc. Pennie has a BA Joint Honours in Humanities and a postgraduate diploma in HR.  She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.

 

Andrew Davis, Director of Communications

ANDREW DAVIS was appointed Director of Communications in October 2010.  He was previously Director of Communications, Europe, Russia, Central Asia & Israel, for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.  Prior to that he was Product and Corporate Press Relations Manager for Porsche Cars Great Britain and was a Press Officer at Group Lotus Limited.  Andrew started his career as an account executive for The Impact Agency, having graduated from Glasgow University with an MA.

Duncan Emery, Strategy Director

DUNCAN EMERY was appointed Strategy Director in September 2010 after moving from British Car Auctions Group, a holding of Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, which he joined in 2007 as Business Development and Strategy Director. He was later appointed European Operations Director.  Previously  Duncan held several positions at British Vita a holding of Texas Pacific Group, including Manager of Group Business Development.  He worked for BOC, McKinsey and Company, and Amey Infrastructure Services before moving to British Vita. Duncan holds a degree in physics from Imperial College, where he also completed his PhD.

Christopher Roberts, General Counsel

CHRIS ROBERTS was appointed General Counsel in September 2010.  He joined Smiths Detection from CBS where he was Legal Director for the Outdoor Advertising Division.  Prior to joining CBS, Chris was Group General Counsel for Reckitt Benckiser and has held significant roles at both Sybase Inc and IBM Inc. He had joined Slaughter and May in March 1990 having achieved his LLB from Warwick University. Chris is also an Attorney at Law for New York as well as an MBA graduate from the Rotterdam School of Management affiliated to Erasmus University. Prior to pursuing a legal career, he graduated from Cambridge University.

Ian Vallance, Director of Finance

IAN VALLANCE was appointed Director of Finance of Smiths Detection in February 2010. Ian joined Smiths Group in 2004 as Manager Financial Reporting and after 18 months was promoted to Director, Internal Audit.  A year later he became Finance Director for the Smiths seals business, John Crane EAA.  When the John Crane HQ moved to Chicago in August 2008 Ian returned to the position of Director, Internal Audit.

John Burton, Vice President, Global Operations

JOHN BURTON, Vice President Global Operations, is responsible for the leadership of Smiths Detection’s global manufacturing operations, supply chain, quality and logistics management efforts.  He  took up the appointment in August, 2010. John was previously with General Motors, from 1994, and his leadership roles included various plant management positions for GM in Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom. His career also included a period in Switzerland, in the GME headquarters, where he was lean manufacturing director, and in Japan, with Nissan. Immediately prior to joining Smiths Detection  he was Executive Director for Greenfield Projects at GM.

Bill Mawer, President, Diagnostics

BILL MAWER is President of the Diagnostics strategic business unit established in 2008.  Bill joined Smiths in 2000, in the former Aerospace division, as Director of Marketing and Strategy, moving from BAE Systems. While in Smiths Aerospace he developed the original strategy to create a security business and when Smiths Detection  became a stand alone operating division he ran the North America and UK businesses, then Director of Strategy and Research & Development, from 2005. The Diagnostics activity was started during this period. A Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, he received his engineering degree from Birmingham University and completed a five-year short service commission in the British Army before moving into the defence and aerospace industry.

Brian Boso

Dr BRIAN BOSO was appointed Chief Scientist in 2010, and is co-leader of the divisional technology team responsible for all Research & Development activities.  He was previously Chief Technology Officer for the Global Military & Emergency Responders group. Brian joined Smiths Detection in August 2003, having previously held the positions of VP of R&D at Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. and VP of Technology at Tektronix, Inc. During his career, Brian has held positions in technology/R&D management, basic/applied research, product/process development, marketing/sales management, and manufacturing. Brian graduated from the University of Illinois with a Ph.D. in physics and held a postdoctoral position at the Pennsylvania State University

Hermann Ries

Dr HERMANN RIES is co-leader of the divisional technology team responsible for all Research & Development activities, with particular responsibility for imaging technologies.  Hermann Ries joined Heimann Systems (later Smiths Heimann) in 1989, becoming R & D Director in 1996 which embraced the co-ordination of R & D activities in France and Tennessee. In 2003 he was appointed R & D Director of Smiths Detection International/EMEA, then in 2008 Chief Technology Officer for the Security & Inspection group, before taking up his current appointment in August 2010.

Magnus Ovilius, VP Government Relations

MAGNUS OVILIUS is VP Government Relations for Smiths Group and a member of the Smiths Detection senior management team. He joined Smiths in December 2008 in the Detection division, where he established the European office in Brussels. Magnus was previously with the European Commission, from 1996, where he held various management positions including a diplomatic posting representing the EC to the Russian Federation. Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Magnus was Head of Sector, Preparedness and Crisis Management in the Directorate General for Justice Freedom and Security, where he was responsible for the formulation, implementation and evaluation of European Union counter-terrorism policies. Prior to this Magnus was with the Swedish Armed Forces serving as an operations officer in the UN Forces in Lebanon. Magnus holds a degree of Master of Laws from the University of Lund in Sweden.
