Veterinary Diagnostics

Animal diseases pose a threat to wildlife, commercial livestock and pets alike, which can result in potentially damaging economic and environmental effects, short and long term. Disease outbreaks such as Foot-and-Mouth, Avian Influenza and Bluetongue have highlighted the importance of early identification of the disease in limiting the spread. However, efforts to control outbreaks can be complicated by the need to transport all samples to a reference laboratory for ultimate identification. This is a major problem if the lab is located in another country or continent.

Smiths Detection’s Portable Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory addresses the issue by avoiding any transportation of samples to a lab. With this system the lab is taken into the field. It has been designed with field veterinarians in mind, comprising a portable briefcase-sized Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) instrument and a disposable sample preparation unit. Together they provide rapid on-site identification, in a wide range of weather conditions, by veterinarians or other specialists who require no technical understanding of PCR.
