STEPHEN PHIPSON has been President of Smiths Detection since 1 August 2004. He joined Smiths Group plc in 1997 and was previously Managing Director of Smiths Interconnect, a global leader in the supply of application specific high reliability electronic components and subsystems, with operations in Europe, the USA, Central America, Japan and China.Stephen has an MSc in Operations Management and has held several senior roles in the electronics and defense industries both in Europe and the USA.
Stephen is Chairman of the UKTI Security Sector Advisory Group; Vice President,Security, at ADS, the UK trade association; Vice Chairman of the Security Commission of the Aerospace, Space and Defense (ASD) trade association of Europe; a council member of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IOD). He is the Past Chair of the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers Community (RISC).

CHRIS GANE, joined Smiths Detection in February 2009 as Chief Operating Officer. Chris started his career as an avionics software engineer with General Dynamics following a degree in Physics and Computing at Brighton University.In 1996 he joined Thales Optronics where he became Director of the Naval, Airborne and Logistic Support Business sectors. In 2000 Chris took up the role of Managing Director at Thales Optronics and was promoted to Vice President, Defence Optronics in 2004.
In 2007 he was appointed Vice President for Thales Training and Simulation (part of the new Security Solutions and Services Division) with operations in UK, France, Germany and Australia plus many regional centres for sales and support.
Chris is a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a member of the Institute of Directors and is active within the Society of British Aerospace Companies where he chairs the Market Development Board.

ALAN DUNSMORE has been the Director of Finance of Smiths Detection since 2004. He joined Smiths Group in 1995 in the Medical Division and held various positions throughout that business, including some time in Japan. Immediately prior to joining Smiths Detection, he was Director of Finance for the international business of Smiths Medical. Prior to joining Smiths, he was with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Glasgow, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992.

PENNIE BOYKO joined Smiths in September 1997 in a Corporate HR role. She was appointed Director HR for Smiths Medical in February 2001 and to her present position as Vice President of Human Resources, in January 2009. Prior to joining Smiths, Pennie worked for the Ford Motor Company and previously spent three years working for News International in Liverpool and Wapping. She commenced her HR career working for Eastern Energy plc. Pennie has a BA Joint Honours in Humanities and a postgraduate diploma in HR. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.

RYAN RONEY first joined Smiths in October 2000 as Corporate Counsel for the Aerospace division. He held various legal positions throughout that business, as well as Smiths Group, increasingly specialising in the Detection business from 2004. Prior to joining Smiths, he was with White & Case in Los Angeles and clerked for the Honorable Robert D. Potter, United States District Court Judge.

BERNHARD SEMLING was appointed Director of Strategy and Communications in 2008. He joined Smiths through the acquisition of Heimann Systems in 2002 where he held senior positions in product management, marketing, business development & strategy. In 2003, he was also appointed Director Strategy & Business Development for Smiths Detection International, before moving into a central role in 2004, developing Smiths Detection’s new divisional strategy. After a year as Director, Smiths Detection UK & Ireland, he returned to a divisional strategy development role in 2006. He had previously worked as a sales & marketing consultant, having graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from the University Offenburg. He also holds an MBA from the University of Reutlingen.

MAGNUS OVILIUS, Vice President Government Relations, joined Smiths Detection 1 December 2008. Magnus was previously with the European Commission, from 1996, where he held various management positions including a diplomatic posting representing the EC to the Russian Federation. Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Magnus was Head of Sector, Preparedness and Crisis Management in the Directorate General for Justice Freedom and Security, where he was responsible for the formulation, implementation and evaluation of European Union counter-terrorism policies. These included defence related aspects of counter-terrorism, law enforcement led civil protection, critical infrastructure protection, crisis management, CBRNE, and Security Research. Prior to this Magnus was with the Swedish Armed Forces serving as an operations officer in the UN Forces in Lebanon. Magnus holds a degree of Master of Laws from the University of Lund in Sweden.Investor Director

BRIAN JONES joined Smiths Group plc as Chief Information Officer in March, 2008 and is a member of the Smiths Group plc Executive Committee. He was appointed by Smiths as the Investor Director at Smiths Detection Group Ltd in 2008. Prior to joining Smiths, Brian was Interim CIO at Scottish Power plc and SVP Business Transformation and CIO at Burberry plc. His previous career included senior positions at Allied Domecq, and IBM.

CHERIF RIZKALLA, President, Security & Inspection, has global responsibility for the business units within Smiths Detection developing and manufacturing imaging and explosives trace detection products and systems. He is also responsible for sales of these and other Smiths Detection products to security and inspection markets worldwide. He is a naturalized Canadian and earned a college degree in Pure Sciences and a degree in Electrical Engineering, specialized in technological innovation, he has been in the high technology security industry for over 20 years. In 1995 he was appointed President for Heimann Systems in North America, becoming President, Civil Business North America for Smiths Detection, following the acquisition of Heimann by Smiths and then President, The Americas, before taking up his current appointment in October 2008.

TONY McENROE was appointed President, Asia Pacific in May 2008. Previously, from November 2006, he had been VP Business Development, having joined joined Smiths Detection in 2005 with the acquisition of Farran Technology, where he was Managing Director. Prior to joining Smiths, he was Managing Director of Ultracoat GmbH in Germany and he has also lived in the US, where he was Executive VP of Operations for Ultrafast Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree and a Masters in Electronic Engineering Science from University College in Dublin, as well as a Masters in Business Administration from Dublin City University.

BILL MAWER, is President, Diagnostics, the strategic business unit established in 2008. Previously, he was Director of Strategy and Research & Development from 2004, having been President, Smiths Detection North America. He had first joined Smiths as Director of Marketing and Strategy for the Aerospace division in April 2000, moving from BAE SYSTEMS, where he was marketing director responsible for the Electronic Warfare, Radar, Infra-red countermeasures and IFF systems areas. A Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, he received his BSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Birmingham University and completed a five-year short service commission in the British Army before moving into the defence and aerospace industry.

MAL MAGINNIS has global responsibility for the business units within Smiths Detection developing and manufacturing chemical & biological agent detection systems and chemical identification products. He is also responsible for sales of these and other Smiths Detection products to military customers and emeregency responders worldwide. He was appointed VP Asia Pacific in July 2001 after spending almost two years working extensively in the industry in Australia. He was appointed to the role of President Smiths Detection Asia Pacific in early 2004 and added the Military and Emergency Responder responsibilities in February 2008. Prior to joining Smiths Detection, Mal had an extensive professional career in many countries including training in Australia, Asia, UK and US. He has worked as a consultant in the security industry and held executive position within the Australian Defence Force during his 20 years service.Contact
