iLane
MORE THAN A SECURITY SOLUTION
Feature highlights
- Automated checkpoint situation for passenger convenience
- Automated threat detection (liquids and explosives)
- Automated checkpoint processes increasing passenger throughput
Growing passenger numbers and ever increasing security standards are posing a major challenge to airport operators. At the same time they are required to manage their security procedures in a more efficient and economic way.
iLane – the innovative checkpoint concept from Smiths Detection – is designed to optimise the efficiency of processes whilst keeping up with the high demands of new security standards.
The sophisticated checkpoint solution iLane is designed as a major advance in ergonomic and operational standards, allowing for quick and convenient processes for passengers and security operators alike.
iLane’s wide variety of modular components allows for individually designed checkpoints, intelligently integrated into existing airport environments and infrastructure. The innovative concept seamlessly incorporates Smiths Detection’s proven ProLine series of system components with numerous ground-breaking active and passive elements to optimise security checkpoint processes.
For maximum effectiveness, the iLane concept can easily be combined with any of Smiths Detection’s advanced checkpoint x-ray solutions.
iLane is more than a security solution – iLane facilitates a new approach to checkpoint security, adding fast, passenger friendly and cost efficient processes to the highest levels of security.

iLane.one iLane.one is an example for an intelligent checkpoint solution which already demonstrated high throughput capabilities, as part of optimised security processes, in a real airport environment. Thanks to its extended length, several passengers can drop and re-collect their personal items in parallel. So passengers moving slower can be overtaken by those in a hurry. If re-inspection is required after the people screening process, passenger cabins guarantee privacy and convenience. Bags highlighted as being suspicious after the x-ray screening are diverted on to a separate lane leading directly to a defined re-inspection area. Disruption for the great majority of passengers, collecting their cleared items, is thus avoided. Finally, a gravity driven tray return system takes the empty bins back to the start of the security lane. Thanks to a joint re-inspection area connecting two passenger checkpoints as well as an advanced image distribution system, up to three recheck workstations can be deployed flexibly, depending on the volume of traffic. iLane.pass iLane.pass offers higher automation at checkpoints with an attractive cost-performance ratio. Passengers and security staff benefit from a convenient bag-drop procedure starting with an automatic tray dispenser and motorised movement of items towards the X-ray unit. Based on the operator’s decision, suspicious bags highlighted by the X-ray screening, are automatically rejected to a separate lane for re-inspection. A reliable gravity driven system provides further movement of bags, either to the re-inspection area or to the area for passengers to collect their cleared bags. Empty trays can then be fed into the automatic tray return system, taking them back to the front of the checkpoint for passenger use. The separation of the two lanes for accepted and rejected items and an operator workplace between the two, allows for a close interface between passengers and security staff. iLane.evo iLane.evo is the fully automated checkpoint solution, offering a comprehensive technical and operational platform for cutting-edge security equipment with optimised operational costs. This example of a successful iLane implementation in a real airport environment has shown an increase of more than 20% in throughput. A core feature of this solution is the avoidance of operators’ distraction from non-security related activities as well as the minimisation of repetitive movements. Starting with three or even more independent bag-drop positions with tray dispensers, a fully motorised bag transfer with controlled speed and spacing conveys bags towards a high-performance X-ray unit. Based on the operator’s decision, an automatic diversion of suspicious items can be carried out. Cleared bags can be accessed by the passengers at multiple positions and finally a sophisticated IR camera-based empty tray recognition device feeds the trays into the fully automated return system. Suspicious items are inspected in a separate re-inspection area where different technologies can ensure a reliable matching of passenger’s items to the X-ray images. |
