      Originally developed by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) to protect NATO troops operating in Kosovo, the Chemical, Atomic and Toxic Compound Surveillance System (CATSS) is a unique detection and early warning system offering unrivalled perimeter protection for military forces and industrial teams working in hazardous areas.

      A network of systems can quickly be deployed, providing instant detection and warning for troops or personnel anywhere in the world.
      CATSS is backed by the leading chemical detector business,Smiths Detection, and one of Northern Europe’s leading software development companies, Lenco Software.

      The ruggedised CATSS system is designed to provide a networked detection and early warning capability to military forces or industrial teams operating within a potentially hazardous Chemical Warfare Agent (CWA) or Toxic Industrial Material areas.

      CATSS is programmed to detect known CWAs, user defined Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs) and gamma radiation, along with local atmospheric data,enabling accurate reporting and modelling of the hazard and how it may develop over time.

      The system consists of a number of sensor stations that are networked to a central computer unit/software via a cable or radio link.

      The system, although new, is based on leading commercial off the shelf (COTS) sensors and software, which interact to interpret sensor information and data and produce timely warnings and alarm messages for the users.

      In case of alarm an early prediction of the hazard area based on the concentration and characteristics of the detected hazard compound and meteorological data allow rapid evacuation of civilian or military personnel.
      It also allows accurate threat assessments to be made and response teams to be fully informed of the threats. If desired, an operator’s action guide may accompany each alarm.

      When integrated with a command, control and information system, tailored warnings may be provided to selected units according to the situation.

      The weight and volume of the system allows for transportation by car or helicopter. It may also be hand carried over short distances by one to two people.
