Smiths Detection wins $19.25 million US Department of Defense contract for nerve and blister agent detector
Second major DoD contract in nine months for easy-to-use, hand-held chemical warfare agent monitor
Edgewood, MD, 21 March 2007 - Smiths Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announced its military unit has been awarded a delivery order for over 4,100 Improved Chemical Agent Monitor (ICAM) units. The contract from the US Department of Defense is valued at $19.25 million and follows a $9.5 million contract for ICAM awarded in June 2006.
ICAM is a highly effective, hand-held device that is battle-proven and reliable. It quickly monitors and confirms nerve and blister agent contamination in personnel, vehicles, equipment and terrain. The ICAM is used both in military applications and by emergency service providers.
Smiths Detection is a world-leading provider of x-ray technology and systems that detect and identify chemicals, biological threats and explosives.
Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, said: “This follow-on order for ICAM is a further recognition of the technology, quality and reliability built into Smiths Detection chemical agent detectors, which are helping to protect military forces world-wide.
“ICAM clearly meets the DoD’s requirement for a highly advanced hand-held chemical warfare agent monitor that can quickly confirm the presence or absence of contamination by these lethal agents.”
The ICAM is based on the highly successful Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM), developed by Smiths Detection. Over 70,000 CAMs have been deployed world-wide, including to recent conflicts.
