Smiths Detection Names Edgewood as U.S. Headquarters
Global firm aligns production close to customers
Edgewood, MD, August 28. 2012 - Smiths Detection today formally confirmed its recently expanded plant in Edgewood, Md. as its new US headquarters, part of its strategy of aligning production more closely to major customers.
Its long-standing Edgewood facility already plays a key role in meeting the growing demand for advanced threat detection technologies from government agencies and companies representing aviation, transportation, military, emergency response and public infrastructures.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley said: “Smiths Detection has developed innovative products to address the most significant challenges we have faced as a nation since the attacks of September 11, 2001. Working with Smiths Detection to expand its operations here in Maryland, we are not only enhancing the State’s ability to protect both our nation and our people, but also positioning Maryland as the leader in homeland security, creating jobs and growing our innovation economy.”
Lance Roncalli, US Managing Director, Smiths Detection, said: “We will continue to make the investments necessary to be the leading provider of advanced security solutions for both domestic and international markets. Growing our Maryland footprint gives us the opportunity to work more closely with core customers in and around Washington, DC, whose mission is homeland security and to aid in safeguarding citizens, troops, airports, ports, and borders around the world.”
Smiths Detection has invested more than $8.5 million in its Edgewood operation, increasing the local workforce by 25%. The site recently expanded by some 100,000 sq feet to accommodate manufacturing for the company’s X-ray, baggage screening, and security scanning systems for North and South American customers. Edgewood is also where Smiths Detection makes Joint Chemical Agent Detectors (JCADs), to safeguard soldiers as part of one of the US Department of Defense’s largest chemical warfare protection programs.
